the original image

attempt number 2

attempt number 3

now, between the second and the third attempt, which do you prefer? why?

or, possibly you find that both pictures don't work for you? again, why?

by the way, this was sort of an attempt at HDR, although even i am skeptical that the pictures look like anything but HDR. hence, the title.

if anyone's interested, i'll describe in brief how i managed to get the details from both light and dark portions of the picture.

ps - here's a brief description of how i got these two images, copied and pasted from an email to a good friend (7/8/2006):

Quote:
basically, from that one source file, i made two copies. one copy, i adjusted the exposure levels for the dark parts so that they look okay. then i made some tweaks in color. same process for the other copy, but this time, it was for the skies. bila dah puas hati edit both copies, then i combine them together using that technique i read at luminous-landscape.com (look up the tutorial on digital blending).

it's sort of hdr, but not at the same time. i haven't been able to achieve hdr-like effects just yet with this combination process, but at least i managed to get 'correct exposure' for the whole image. oh yes, you may want to adjust the opacity and fill with the layers too, before merging/flattening the images together. you can also try to play around with the blending options to see what you can get.

tweak the image as you see fit. you may merge/flatten the images before or after making the necessary tweaks, but it's probably easier to flatten before you edit the picture.
