unfinished business

apologies, mr mahfouz, i've been taking too much of my sweet time to finish your trilogy.

image captured with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 & 50mm f1.8.

good shot Tue 27-Jun-2006 05:52

You captured with two lenses? 18-55mm & 50mm? How? Tue 27-Jun-2006 22:43
Posted by:Edoras  - [Link]
thanks for dropping by, all. this is another shot using the reverse lens technique.

edoras, to answer your question, i used two lenses for this shot (and also for the ikon entry previously). one lens (18-55mm) is, of course, attached to the body. the other lens (50mm), i just put it face to face with the lens that's attached to the camera body. the 50mm acts as a powerful diopter, thus allowing me to take macro shots without having to actually buy a macro lens. the big catch is that i have to be extremely close to the subject, like an inch or 1.5 inches away. so, susah sikit la nak amik gambar insects kot, unless they're dead.

in the company of friends (and good food)

a not-so-recent image. for some reason, i just like the warm, fuzzy feeling that this picture evokes in me.

hmmmmmmmmmm... makan sedap nampak?!
sape yg pakai baju putih tuh?

cekmie, yup. you can almost sense the kinship between the people in the picture.

txh62, betul jugak tu. macam bukak puasa pun ada jugak. tapi sebenarnya, ni birthday party (extended version, throughout the whole weekend).

moqq, baju putih yang mana tu? yang berdiri tu ke?

tok mudin, ni amik dari tepi meja tu je. wide angle lens yang buat dia nampak lain sikit.

ikon

an icon (a nikon? some people pronounce it that way) for all ages.

shot with 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 and 50mm f1.8.

minimal editing: cropping, desaturation, contrast, resize, film grain, unsharp mask.

comments, please.

ps - this entry is actually a testing of the poor man's macro technique. read about it here to see how you can achieve it, without having to spend big bucks on a macro lens. boy oh boy, it sure got me really excited.

now, if only someone can tell me where to get a macro coupler ring here in malaysia. it's quite difficult holding the 50mm like how the article mentions it should be set up (19/6/06).

waliauu..
really nice close-up, man..
nicely editing controlled..

reverse lens? i haven't tried it. Tue 27-Jun-2006 02:14
Posted by:azam  - [Link]
cekya, the 'N' was left out to give it a bit of a story. also so that i could have a bit of a play on words. is it an ikon or a nikon? also, i thought the grain would give the picture a nice timeless touch, with the black and white.

ezdy, thanks. it was a test shot for the reverse lens technique. this one worked out the best. you can see that the depth of field is very very small. some would even say it's paper thin. i didn't even attempt to focus for this shot. i just moved in and out a bit until i got the focus on the area that i wanted. no wonder there is such a thing as a macro slider!

azrul, thanks for dropping by. in case you're wondering, this shot is actually of a not-so-old film slr body. i was practically an inch or two away from it, handholding the lenses together.

pian, go ahead and try it out. i'm sure you'll be quite pleased with the results. tapi kena guna a 50mm la kot, to get the big aperture. and if you can, get a macro coupler ring as well so that senang sikit nak try technique ni.

radinism, thanks. yes, this is literally a close up. also, since the image is in black and white, there wasn't any need to do much editing to it.

azam, cari la 50mm yang lama lama. tapi kena guna 50mm yang boleh manually adjust the aperture la. then set the focus on it to infinity.

la luna

ever had one of those full moon moments?

would be glad to hear any comments on the image above. it's supposed to be an HDR image.

iena, thanks for the vote of confidence. after reading up a bit, baru la tau technique (or rather the setting) untuk amik gambar bulan so that nampak semua benda kat surface dia. i think p&s cameras pun boleh buat, provided ada manual control. all you have to do is to meter your camera against the moon, then go two stops under. kalau expose 'correctly', memang nampak bulat terang je la.

khairul hafiz sf, terima kasih. percubaan yang berjaya sikit lepas percubaan pertama buat bulan nampak macam hexagon (refer to the 'blackout photography' entry).

cekya, actually gambar ni terpaksa crop sikit because i had put it dead center initially. my composition didn't really matter at the time because it was all dark negative space around the moon. but i was really interested in getting the illuminated clouds around the moon. taking the picture at two stops under didn't really make it possible.

ezdy, i get you're trying to say. really must thank you for your HDR entry. it helped me solve the problem i had about getting this picture. i thought that having just the moon in the picture, even with all the interesting lunarscapes, would've made the image not as interesting. so, i wanted to create a composite image that would show the immediate vicinity around the moon as well. the above image is the best compromise i could get. if i were to get another moon shot, i think i'd want to include some earthscape too, preferably urban landscapes. that might be a bit of a challenge, considering the two-stop necessity. but i think i can figure out how to do it. of course, it'll involve exposure bracketing. hehe hope you understand what i'm saying!

of waves

it may not be exactly like the big, wide field we played on ten years back. but then again, we aren't the same people we were ten years back either. much like the beach we were on, we had seen and experienced the waves of time upon us.

and much like the beach we were on, we were changed every time a wave from time hit us.

so, let it be just this one time, that we can delay the waves of time upon crashing onto us just for a short while.

just so we can be the boys of ten years back again for a short while.

pian, the answer to your question is yes. lens ni ada mount for konica minolta sekali. you can check at the website. tapi tak sure la pulak kalau boleh cari kat kl ni...

tuan tokeikedai, betul jugak tu. nak kata memang nak gambar macam tu tak jugak. ada jugak percubaan untuk mengurangkan contrast kat kawasan tu, tapi kurang berjaya la. mungkin kalau guna technique HDR, masalah ni boleh diselesaikan. tapi susah jugak la nak kata kekadang tu... saya ni kalau edit gambar tu, ikut suka saya jugak. the one thing that i try as best as i can is to maintain the details. takpe takpe, lesson learnt.

ezdy, it was fun. mula mula tu malas jugak nak join, but i couldn't resist five minutes after taking this picture. the words are actually composed after putting this picture up. took me quite a while to remember exactly what it was like on the beach, then i could write.

suhaimi, boleh kata demam bola jugak la hehe, walaupun memang tak sengaja jugak pilih gambar ni for this entry. to me, the wide angle lens gives me a different perspective on things, as compared to the other lenses that i have now. so, i'm still trying out different angles and themes to see how this lens works best. the fact that it won the best consumer lens award for TIPA 2006 just makes the lens seem more valuable to me now. by the way, this picture was actually taken with a borrowed 12-24mm f4 nikkor lens.

nd, likewise it was a great pleasure meeting you the other day. insyaAllah, will join again when the 'stars' are all aligned properly hehe.

cikyamx, that thing in the middle? tu la bola yang digunakan.

thanks for dropping by, all!

en azli, the focus in the bottom picture was on the group of men, if i remember correctly. yes, this picture was shot with a wide angle lens and using slow shutterspeed. aperture was probably f8 (sharpness of images improves a lot at this aperture and smaller for this particular lens).

nemesis, i'm a bit of a private person, so tak nak letak banyak sangat gambar for this entry. in both pictures, you either can't see the faces clearly or the people in the pictures aren't really family. i have yet to reach that stage where i'm comfortable with revealing who my family members are. don't know if i'll ever be.

chubby-cheek, not bad la guna wide angle for weddings. but got to use sparingly kot, as i found out after shooting two more weddings with the wide angle lens. or kena pandai frame the shot.

7asmann, lens ni bukan stok pinjam hehe.

edoras, it's a sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 lens. untuk canon pun ada hehe.

ezdy, ada jugak la application for wide angle for wedding shots. i think a few photographers are already using wide angle lenses for weddings. it certainly does give a different (perhaps fresh) perspective. but it may not be everyone's cup of tea la, because the distortion becomes more pronounced the closer you are to the crowd. but that's usually if i zoom out to 10mm. the distortion pretty much disappears once i go 18mm, i think. for you, i would say maybe we shouldn't look at the distortion as a bad thing. perhaps what we should do is to look for ways to capitalize on the distortion. would that be possible?

phalinn, thanks! i think this particular wedding gave me lots of nice pictures, due to the rather interesting events (ada tea ceremony).

syahrin, glad to have you here. thanks for the kind compliment. i think i've heard about the NIK plugin filter. or was that a different piece of software i heard of? noise ninja tau la hehe, although tak pernah try.

okay, here's a picture taken in cherating, on the same day as the picture of athen was taken. someone told me this picture is actually more striking than the picture of athen. tah la. i like both of them for different reasons (the pictures la, not the people in the pictures!).

for this picture, i tried playing around with the color balance, levels, curves, saturation, and contrast to get a stylized look. tapi not too severe that the picture looks unnatural. i really wish i could get pictures like this guy's. you can tell the pictures are heavily edited, but tastefully done.

do tell me if the picture works on all counts, ye? dari segi lighting, composition and editing. would really love to know. i'm still a greenhorn when it comes to photoshop.

exif data:
Camera model: NIKON D70s
Date/Time: 2006:04:30 07:21:43
Resolution: 800 x 532
Flash used: No
Focal length: 14.0mm (35mm equivalent: 21mm)
Exposure time: 0.0020 s (1/500)
Aperture: f/16.0
Whitebalance: Manual
Metering Mode: spot
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Auto bracketing

moque, i guess if i wanted to show the show the lighting effect, then you are right: a close up would do the job better. but as i said earlier, i wanted to portray a scene where the two subjects seem to be floating on water. the models? memang agak stiff la. betul la kata hanis tu. i'll definitely have to look around for other models next time i attempt similar shots hehe. behind the scenes

i had the opportunity to tag along (or rather, menyibuk) to the pdb annual report photo shoot just a few days ago. even though i wasn't the person who would be taking the pictures for the report, i was more interested in seeing how it was done. of course, i couldn't pass up the opportunity to take some pictures myself. so, i took some 'behind the scenes' pictures, and i also took some pictures that weren't behind the scenes hehe.

i wouldn't say that i would be able to capture pictures that can be put into any annual report just yet, but at least, i know what the process is like. honestly, speaking, i had thought it would be rather spontaneous.

well, yes and no. yes because there is a small degree of spontaneity involved in these shoots to make them look natural. but the degree of spontaneity was significantly less compared to the planned aspects. angles were studied beforehand, with specific locations for each person marked on the floor. and if there were any variations, it was all done very uniformly. minute changes translated into big differences in the images. it was all a very interesting and elaborate process, just to get a few pictures.

the equipment? hmm, don't think i'm qualified or even knowledgeable enough to even start. but the photographer (forgot to get his namecard!) was quite friendly and told me and my colleague why he positioned the strobes so and so. or why he used so and so. a bit lost on me, unfortunately.

anyways, here are some pictures that i took that day. enjoy!

oh yes, comments very much welcomed too!

nemesis, still thinking of a good picture to take with the wide angle la. otherwise, tak nampak the advantage of using the wide angle.

yanz, comment la on anything you see here, whether good or bad. would really love to know your thoughts on why the pictures do or don't work.

knizam, yeah. panas jugak masa tu. i remember that particular shot lasted about half an hour. tu yang kena lap peluh a few times jugak tu hehe.

fique, i believe the kit lens and the 50mm are more than adequate to produce stunning images, as is apparent on your page. keep it up!

7asmann, sapa punya lens? hehe ada la kawan tu...

cekya, yup! once you go wide, memang susah jugak nak revert back to other types of lenses. it's just like they say: once you go black... oops, kena censor...

suhaimi, sungguh stim... tapi dalam entry ni tak nampak stim sangat kot.

thanks for dropping by, all!

Love, love, love all the wide angle shots. Best ! . Those shot inside the store are yellowish la. The lighting kot. Uhh, I must also say that I love it that you shot and share the off camera / on camera situations. Kelakar la tgk diaorg lap muka dan kepala . Thu 25-May-2006 09:34
Posted by:ezdy  - [Link]
ezdy, admittedly i was lazy in editing these pictures. i used picasa only. dalam kedai tu nampak yellowish because memang banyak yellow in the store, and probably because i tried to 'warm' up the picture a bit. it was quite intentional for me to show the off camera pictures as well, to give that behind the scenes feel. i wouldn't really say this was an artistic entry. rather, it was more of an informative entry la, but with a hint of art in it. i'm sure many of us would be curious to know how such pictures are produced, so i tried to share a bit of the process that's involved. wide open spaces.

blue skies.

man stamping his mark.

ps - every time i look at the second picture, i'm always reminded of pearl jam's yield album. i think it's the blue sky kot (24/5/06).

kichi,
in reference to beca nyer exposure comment, kau penah dgr sunny f16 nyer rule tak?

fique, dah kena racun wide angle, ye? hehe it'll give you a very interesting perspective on even normal things. telephoto? maybe some other time.

tony, ingat ingat lupa la rule tu. but actually, i didn't really set the camera properly for that shot. the second picture was shot with f22, the smallest aperture on the lens. itupun with quite a fast shutterspeed and iso 200, pasal it really was that bright.
