studio bukit tabur

intrepid photographers

didn't really intend for the editing to come out like this initially, but once i started, i just couldn't stop.

admittedly, it's not a perfect picture though. have to bear in mind to be more thorough next time.

three things that i would rectify if i could (or rather, reshoot and make sure these three things are corrected).

anybody want to guess what the three are? no prizes la, since they're quite obvious hehe.

ps - these are the three things i would correct in the picture: the feet of the model at the front excluded a bit from the picture; the shadow on the model at the back; and the plant that is blocking the sun (22/4/2007).

izzaezani and hafizmazlan, thanks for the kind compliments. it was a fun trip up bukit tabur that morning for us. i think we may make another trip up bukit tabur, to go to a higher point.

zuhri, those three? hehe they do sound like very very good reasons! but no, the models aren't really to be blamed for the imperfections...

7asmann, bukit tabur ni kat klang gate dam. gate masuk ke empangan tu dekat dekat je dengan starting point untuk naik bukit tabur ni.

najib, the wide angle lens was good for this shot, as it captured a lot of the background, thus giving the viewer an idea of where this shot was taken. don't remember if i shot this at 10mm, though i think i did. the light composition worked well, fortunately. but of course, i used photoshop to enhance the exposure and the colors as well.

nadio, nak tukar model boleh saja, tapi kena bayar la kot. tu yang tak mampu tu hehe.

baruang, lens ni dah lama beli. in fact, the sigma 10-20mm is the lens i use most often. and yes, mamat yang kena bayang tu is one of the three mistakes that i mentioned. kalau tak photoshop tu, memang tak nampak langsung macam mana muka dia.

lordnabil, that was the best i could do to bring out your features, bro.

amir, bukit tabur ni very accessible. kitorang pun amik masa dalam 20 minit je nak panjat to a decent spot. kalau nak pegi lagi tinggi pun boleh.

cekya, glad you like the picture!

kukubesi, thank you very much for the kind words. my friend is an ardent fan of your works, and is egging me to go in that same direction hehe. teringin jugak nak overnight kat bukit tabur tu, tapi kena pegi dengan orang yang experienced la kot. tak biasa buat aktiviti macam tu. and actually, gambar ni memang guna ultra wide angle lens pun (sigma 10-20mm), tapi distortion dia dah corrected in photoshop.

tony, dua dua pun tak boleh jadi gollum or frodo. tinggi sangat!

jooj, the shadow is indeed one of the problematic areas in the picture.

mar, practice indeed makes perfect. tapi kekadang tu terlupa jugak pasal dah seronok sangat amik gambar. plus, nak capture the right light makes one rush sometimes. bila dah habis amik gambar, baru perasan ada benda yang tak kena.

insight'scapture, thanks a lot for dropping by!

all, sorry for the late reply, but i've been a bit too busy with work to be able to reply (walaupun edit gambar boleh hehe).

thanks so much for dropping by!

oh, how the stars dance in the nightsky

astral motion

my second try at this. it's quite difficult to attempt this kind of shot here in kl.

i was hoping to capture more of the stars in the picture, but light pollution blocked out the weaker ones.

considerations for the next attempt:

1. shoot where there is minimal light pollution. tawau in june would be a good bet.

2. locate either north or south pole star (polaris? sigma octantis? the southern cross?) for maximum effect. we're lucky to be very near the equator to be able to see both.

3. avoid foregrounds that are illuminated, even though very faintly. they'll seem like they're lit by spotlights at the end of the long exposure.

4. immediately release the shutter for the next exposure to avoid the gaps in the trails. lapses of less than a minute are enough to result in the breaks, especially for those stars that are 'travelling' faster.

Bro, how long was your total exposures? Love your shot, terus rasa nak try jugak. Kalau lepas hujan, langit clear tak? Masa tu kalau ambik kat tgh padang selamat ker? Cam bahaya. I think including other elements would be good, but kalau buildings nanti over exposed, kalau pokok nanti blur sebab goyang2. Ehh... byk soalan. Nanti I call you la .
p/s - Weekend ni teh tarik boleh?

considering the long exposure, how did you manage the noise? Mon 19-Mar-2007 17:00
Posted by:zuhri  - [Link]
zuhri, this shot is a combination of five separate exposures. that's how i managed the noise. kalau one long exposure, memang confirm noise dia teruk gila.

ezdy, total exposure was 25 minutes for this picture (although it would've been 30 minutes, if i had spliced in the last exposure as well). 15 minutes would've been enough kot hehe, but i kept thinking that it wouldn't hurt to have another one... and another... until my battery ran flat after the sixth exposure. we'll discuss it this weekend, yeah?

7asmann, bagus jugak idea masuk hutan tu, kalau nak try amik gambar macam ni. yang penting, kurang pencemaran cahaya.

ND, most definitely. tapi tu la cabaran dia bila duduk kat bandar besar macam kl ni... light pollution agak teruk. susah jugak nak tengok bintang malam malam. lain la kalau tengok bintang selebriti hehe.

why i (photo)blog?

is there any relevance at all between the topic and the picture?

not too sure, but what the hell.

anyways, here are some reasons why this fotopage exists:

1. so that i can present things (especially mundane things) from a different perspective.

2. so that i can improve my photography skills.

3. so that i can get constructive feedback on my pictures.

4. so that i can always fall back on something to fill up my time (when i'm not busy, that is).

5. so that i can put up pictures of the cats at home.

6. so that i can leave a link at other people's blogs/websites (yay!).

i only need to come up with six reasons, right?

elsa, thanks for dropping by.

abang su, nak dapat lima pun susah! i'll stop at six hehe.

joni, yang tu chocolate banana cake, yang sedap jugak.

lordnabil, not too sure about the blueberry cheesecake, but i think both cakes came from secret recipe. this impromptu birthday celebration was held after we had dinner (yes, our meeting stretched that long), so it was a very welcome treat after a very long day. dua dua cake sedap!

mar, you betcha those cakes were yummylicious!

So, ur from petronas, ha? Hmm, theres still a bit of redness, ke ape? Just cant help noticing it. I guess the way you set the setting? Tue 13-Mar-2007 16:43
Posted by:beca-  - [Link]
hmm, still a bit of redness? the picture looks okay on my screen, but there have been instances when the colors just seemed wrong on other computers. it could be the color management and/or calibration of the computer, i think. Thu 15-Mar-2007 13:20

(wo)men at work, part two

ouch

for the life of me, i just can't figure out how i got the color from the first round of edits for this picture. i couldn't replicate it, so i tweaked the color balance to reduce the reddish hue (teringat fique punya comment).

so, here it is, mr zuhri, a closer view of the make-up artist as well as the reluctant model for that day.

Kichi,

Hmmm...it's nice to have your make-up done by a pro Tue 6-Mar-2007 11:32
Posted by:Nazra Z.  - [Link]
nazra, i guess it would be nice, although it's quite painful, especially bab nak make up mata. i remember going through it, and it was hell!

abang su, saya sudah jawab!

fique, your comment was about the picture being a bit too red. memang nampak merah sikit, so i tweaked this one to reduce the red hue. no offence taken at all, dude!

cakcibao, thanks. it was the best i could do, given my limited experience.

beca, as you can probably tell from my previous pictures, i'm a sucker for vibrant colors. so i would increase the contrast, tweak the curves, and saturate the colors to get that look i have in my mind's eye. but for this image, even if i were to aim for something more 'normal', this was the best i could come up with, simply because the original image had a rather noticeable red hue. it took quite a bit of editing on my part to remove that red tint. hopefully, the entry after this one seems more original to you.

red, boleh kata macam nak membedah la. takut jugak tengok eyeleash curler tu.

mar, ada jugak lelaki yang suka make up hehe...

phalinn, i concur: the women are gorgeous hehe.

cekya, i didn't really notice how green it was, until you mentioned it! but it looked good on her la, as it should (dia kan l'oreal punya employee... ).

botol + kotak = botak?

heh, just couldn't resist it.

air tu best....tapi hari tu pegi padang minum sekotak je sakit perut seminggu (something wrong la yg minum tu huhu) nice one!!! - soalan dah ada jawapan kat my fp Fri 23-Feb-2007 16:01

syed, the colors are tweaked with curves, and boosted with the hue/saturation tool.

moque, bali belum pegi lagi la, but that will be very soon. hope i'll get some good shots nanti.

siti ruzaimah, cuba cari la tehbotol ni. order je dari syahrin tu!

mun, i'm a sucker for vibrant colors. yang color scheme pelik pelik pun okay jugak, as a different look at normal things.

zuhri, tak pernah jumpa tehbotol kat indonesia? how's that possible?! yang lain lain tu derivative je kot! get the original!

yuddin, memang sedap, lagi lagi kalau sejuuuuk...

mar, kenapa? itu la persoalan yang besar hehe. i guess it's because the tehbotol brand is already so big that it would stick, even if the product is packed in a tetrapak.

sabishii doraiba, order cepat cepat dari syahrin tu!

syahrin, i want two cartons pronto!

spin: the universe or you?

center of the universe?

we are prone to believing that everything in this existence revolves around us. at least, it is our fervent wish for such a situation. every single utterance, breath, gesture we make would affect the cosmos.

but that is only a matter of perception. an egotistical one, no less.

the most probable truth is we are actually victims of circumstance. like the two ladies in the picture above, theirs is a situation probably best described by the malay proverb "kais pagi makan pagi, kais petang makan petang", even though it looks like the world is spinning around them.

instead of being the affector, oftimes, we are the affected.

the center of the universe is probably somewhere else. and we are just one of many caught in the spin that it generates.

Nice pic! It looks like as if you've taken it from a moving vehicle.. Sat 17-Feb-2007 01:02

this one is cool!! i wanna try this.. hehe.. thanks for sharing! Mon 19-Feb-2007 17:42
Posted by:pejal  - [Link]
pejal, give it a try la. i think you should be able to get the same effect with other lenses, although the background may influence result jugak la kot. i was lucky that the two ladies were framed against a plain green background, which helped emphasize the spinning effect.

hanis, this picture was taken from a moving vehicle, indeed.

tony, aku punya skill photoshop takde la sampai takat ni. setakat reti main ngan kaler sikit sikit je hehe. for lack of a better way of describing it, i just called it reverse panning la. there might be a more exact term for this technique.

dome, thanks for the compliment. i guess his eyes do look a bit sad, tapi perangai dia tak sedih sebenarnya hehe.

gee, i'm sure you'd be amused by his antics.

ujang, thank you. it's not too difficult if you have a subject who's quite a natural in front of a camera.

m0qh, bukan anak saya hehe.

ND, he's not my son. kawin pun belum lagi ni.

dell, tak kacau dia. tak caya tanya fio. dia blur kot cari ayah dia masa tu.

tony, rasanya malas la nak edit reuter's style hehe. lain la kalau kerja ngan reuters, confirm kena ikut guideline dia tu. otherwise, i'm going to practice artistic freedom in getting the images i want.

mar, risau pasal ayah dia menghilangkan diri sekejap kot.

alynn, innocence is the one quality in children that we should try to capture before they lose it, right?

jejaka, actually tak perasan pun dia nak nangis masa amik gambar tu. yang perasan lighting agak menarik masa tu hehe.

showtime

the young warrior

his confidence was such a joy to watch, even though he made a few blunders. and there were instances when it seemed like it was more playtime than it was showtime.

perhaps it should be more of playtime.

ewaahh..
tgh bukak kekuda aa tuhh..

lg best kalo bdk tuh ngadap camera kn..
anyway, nice captured..

ezdy, budak ni sebenarnya nakal jugak, but again, it was fun watching them in action. memang diorang main main jugak actually in the middle of the performance, although they got their moves down for the most part. tag baru untuk tahun baru hehe. pouty? hmm, tak disengajakan rasanya.

radinism, unfortunately dia jarang mengadap camera la masa dia perform tu. plus, i don't really have a good long lens, although it's adequate for most of my needs (55-200mm f4-5.6). tu pun dah max out habis. but i'm still quite happy with the shot, because it's quite crisp, if you disregard the noise la. managed to isolate the boy from the rest of the crowd too.

nemesis, terpaksa crank sampai 1600 la. tu pun still goyang lagi pasal guna long lens yang slow. tak banyak shots yang menjadi, but there were many opportunities for me to shoot. ada guna burst jugak la sekali sekala.
