trance

i watched with near-morbid fascination as he scattered the burning coconut husks with his bare feet. his face showed no fear, but a different sort of emotion: glee.

such a different countenance from when he first came out.

as the fire slowed down a bit, one of the performers squirted some fuel onto the husks, and the fire sprang back to life, perhaps with a bit more vengeance. he got just as excited.

meanwhile, the rest of the performers watched with casual nonchalance at the infernal spectacle unfolding just a few feet away from them.

bro, this is in bali right? Fri 25-May-2007 00:22

kecak kecak kich, ini bukan kat uluwatu kan?mine was at uluwatu.my kecak's pics didnt come out as expected.like i said,it mostly raining on most days i was there and instead of watching the kecak dance with the beautiful background,we had to shift it in a 'khodi' hall.but compared to barung dance,i prefered kecak's more.though in every dance performance,i had a very hard time to understand the story lies behind it (geez...i need to learn more bout indonesian accent/language). pening seyy...banyak sangat dewa.and they look kinda spooky too Fri 1-Jun-2007 01:40

ct5ruz, you're right. i watched this performance somewhere near denpasar (teringat pulak the driver rushing like mad through the traffic so that we could catch the show. itupun we missed the first few minutes kot). memang susah nak faham the storyline, because the notes they gave us pun susah nak faham kekadang tu. too bad you didn't get really good weather when you were in bali.

zuhri, correcto mundo! i've got lots of shots in bali, of which i'm very happy. slow slow la release hehe.

mynn, ada banyak jugak yang blur, but for this particular scene, i used the burst function. plus, i had braced my elbows on my knees to steady myself, as i panned the burning man moving across the stage.

faith

belief

faith:

1. confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability.
2. belief that is not based on proof: He had faith that the hypothesis would be substantiated by fact.
3. belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion: the firm faith of the Pilgrims.

(definitions obtained from dictionary.com)

ah i see your reasoning for including that guy. On second thought, he does look a bit like a monk so i guess it fits the theme Mon 21-May-2007 20:57

ct5ruz, actually i don't quite remember where this place was either hehe. banyak tido la in the van. sedar sedar, bila bangun je, dah sampai kat tempat tu. but after much googling, i found the name of this place to be pura tirta empul. to enter this pura, you would have to wear a sash. in my case, i put on my kain pelikat (since i was wearing clambangers) and the priest tied on a sash.

mynn, i wouldn't say that i included him because he had that buddhist monk thing going on. i really cannot explain why i did, but it just felt right. but of course, right and wrong are subjective la.

tradition

ketjak

a mesmerizing dance, created from elements of the sanghyang exorcism and portions of the ramayana epic.

now i know where the soundtrack for the anime version of akira got its inspiration from hehe (although the gamelan portions in some parts of the soundtrack are dead giveaways).

to me Ghost in The Shell's opening theme is haunting too Sat 19-May-2007 08:08

mynn, i like that song too. actually, the whole soundtrack to the movie has an atmospheric quality to it. i used to have the mp3 to that soundtrack, but my hard drive crashed.

ezdy, thanks. i was trying to convey a bit of movement in this photo, although it was a bit unintentional. i'm quite lucky the result was what i had envisioned it to be, so i didn't have to edit it too much. and talking about akira, i have the complete set of the manga, which is much much better than the movie version. the storyline is just better fleshed out.

anyway mamoru ooshi makes excellent anime and comics. I have the GITS comics too and as you said the story is much better fleshed out - especially the technology. Mon 21-May-2007 20:55

second chances, or reflections

reflections

taken at the bird park last sunday.

didn't really think much about this picture when i looked at it on the miniscule lcd screen of the d70. i actually thought that an earlier shot of the same bird was better.

boy, was i wrong.

luckily, i decided to delete the 'rejects' only after viewing them on my laptop.

i guess we should always give a picture more than one look, before really chucking it out the window.

especially when viewing it under not so favorable conditions.

life seems to present us with many similar situations, where an opportunity may not really appear to be favorable or preferable when we first look at it. perhaps, our emotions judged more than our rationale did.

quite similar to viewing a picture on a small 1.7-inch screen, don't you think?

if given the time and space, we should reflect on the opportunity again. aspects that were hitherto hidden, may suddenly present themselves, giving more meaning to the opportunity.

whoah...reflections is awesome la bro. Tue 15-May-2007 15:13

fields of green

wish i could've gone down the terraces, instead of just taking a picture from the top.

mynn, thanks. wasn't quite sure how to capture the lush greenery actually, but i didn't have much choice.

beca, this is at bali. it was a nice break from the office.

radinism, thanks for the compliment. an aerial view, eh? hmmm... it'd be awesome to be a bird swooping down into all that green, and pulling back up at the last moment!

ezdy, you're right. it was shot at around noon, hence the very vibrant tones. just like you, it wasn't just the amazing terraces that got me, the different shades of green were just as majestic.

those yesterdays

memories of yesteryears

the familiar musty stench permeates his senses, as he looks around.

it really hasn't changed all that much since sixteen years ago, he thinks to himself.

his mind races through the memories he had as a thirteen-year old. here was the place he would take a bath, when the toilet at the prep school was inundated with the other boys, sometimes in the dark before the arrival of dawn. those early morning baths always had a tinge of fear laced with excitement, because of the reputation of the place. they would always be very short baths. even now, the thoughts send a slight shiver down his spine.

but he would not have it any other way.

as he turns away from his memories, he semi-seriously considers that it should be forbidden to develop kk, least of all his alma mater.

and the memories shall remain.

saifol, one reason why i took this picture in daytime was to show that the scary memories have been exorcised (although not quite totally) over the years. the editing also reflects that, which is why the middle portion of the picture is bright.

firza, thanks for the advice. indeed, starting small is a good way to start at all.

mynn, i think it's correct.

anisism, you think?

ezdy, hope you have great memories of your time there.

hadiena, composition gambar ni memang nak menampakkan mood nostalgia, although i don't quite remember when i took this picture.

knizam, hehe ni la tandas yang menakutkan tu...

dk, high council member of kedai kopi paklang? errr, not to sure la pulak...

jamming

greatful sounds

trying something different here.

a friend had commented that he was bored looking at 'normal' pictures. i asked him what he meant by that, and he referred me to this page. i pressed him further on the subject, and after a rather long-winded explanation (peppered with some near-miss misunderstandings), it finally dawned on me that he was looking at the pictures differently.

how i see the pictures on fotopages: pictures that try to capture a particular moment in time, perhaps with some tweaks here and there to make it look more interesting.

how he sees the pictures on fotpages (or rather, what he wants to see): digital graphic art, freely crossing over into manipulation, sometimes resulting in images that look like paintings.

two very different schools of thought, but neither being wrong.

either way, the picture above was the best i could come up with, given my limited photoshop skills. his verdict? still a ways to go.

whatever the case, tomorrow night, i'll be expecting a great performance from the people in the image above.

mynn, if you look back at my earlier comment, i said "extensive tweaking". i also do "a bit" of tweaking, adjusting the contrast and colour balance of images, trying to make it to be as close as the original images that i saw with my eyes (not images that i have in my mind - that's 2 different things). but i always work hard try to get images i want straight out of the camera that require a lot of patience, thoughts and of course knowledge - just like film camera users. something that i find that many dslr users often neglect, knowing the fact that everything can be taken care in the pc. I dont mind 'tweaking' in this photo though, as long as it catches my eye. Maybe i wont like it if the angle and composition was quite different (maybe?). In the end it depends on the type of photos you wanted to produce, whether it is art-based, original-kindof-image or somewhere in between. Mon 7-May-2007 10:08

Wow and the very wahhh .... all the very the people of the world over here is the very the speaking ing gurrish so the complication wan .... hohohoho ... I just feel the image .. macam ... err .. kebisingan bangets? Atau memang bising ittiew membawa makesuts tertentiew beggittiew?

By the way .. I respected this attempt in anyway, bro ... not that I'm the person who's anything at photography ...

jimbaran sunset

tomorrow, perhaps

the end of another day.

will tomorrow bring better fortunes?

ps - after reading mynn's and reza's comments, i've decided to redo the picture, sans the sharpening of the ocean. took me a while to figure out how to use the history brush tool to selectively apply sharpness to the picture (22/4/2007).

edoras, admittedly there is not much difference, because the area that's affected is only the ocean. but i guess some people do pay attention to the details.

paooz, good to hear from you after such a long time. hope you're doing fine. interesting observation you have there about the boats. i think it would've conveyed a different sort of impact, no less on par as this one, i believe. not too sure why i included the boats in the picture, but i think it was because of the sun's position, which made it almost impossible to exclude the boats.

sheclicks, thanks for the kind compliment. hope you'll get a good sunset shot at pd this weekend. it'll be good to arrive there about an hour before sunset, so that you have a good idea of how you want to frame your shot. you won't have much time, because our sunsets are quite short, although quite spectacular (same thing with our sunrises, which has something to do with our location being near the equator, if i'm not mistaken).

hey kichi...it has been really a while ya...anyway,this is really a good pic.i like the combination of colors u got here...it reminds me of syed nasir's pic.anyway, just wondering...which part of jimbaran is this?i didnt manage to get some of the pics i wanted when i was in bali becos it was raining on most days we were there.but i did went to jimbaran...just to eat grill seafood...heheh.nvm.next time pegi sane i can be selective on places that i should/not go.unlike last time,balik2 visit pura(temple) je....naik pening kepala.hahaha Sun 6-May-2007 01:42
Posted by:ct5ruz  - [Link]
ct5ruz, i guess i was lucky when i was in bali. it hardly rained, but the skies were beautiful. got a bit sunburned too, but that's okay. which part of jimbaran? err, isn't it the same everywhere on the beach? but i do remember that we were close enough to be able to spot the planes coming in to land at ngurah rai airport.

i didn't really mind visiting all the temples, as i found the architecture quite interesting. but i think, if i go again, i want to go to the northern part of bali, and also go to a dancing school for pictures. saja nak tengok how they train to become dancers.

hmm, diving would be great too, if it's not too costly.

ben zephaniah

ben zephaniah

i believe this poetry reading by benjamin zephaniah was the first poetry reading i've ever attended. i'll admit that i was there to shoot some pictures as much as i was interested to see what kind of event a poetry reading is like.

especially when the kind of poetry being read is dub poetry.

heh.

at the end of it, i must say that i came away with a rather positive feeling about poetry readings. the three poets who read/recited their works (and also the informative and entertaining shadow play by the kg berembang children) renewed my interest in witty wordplay, although i don't think i'll be able to support myself with poetry.

my regrets?

i didn't get to sit upfront, but that's the photographer in me talking.

and where were the pretty girls?!!!

hmm, i guess dub poetry just ain't their thing.

I heard this guy was reaaaallly good. and by reading an article in the paper about him, he seems like and honest man providing a voice for the common peaple

His books is the top in the list of most frequently stolen from public libraries in Britain. (He's delighted that kids with no money can read his works tho)

Ni bokeh effect...works well with the B&W conversion too

adam, harga sigma 10-20mm tu dalam rm2.1k masa beli tahun lepas. tak tau la kalau dah kurang sekarang ni. pinjam? errr... kejap kejap boleh la kot hehe.

amrufm, he really was good. not just his wordplay, but how he recited them. sometimes, it almost seemed like he was high on something, but very much coherent.

in the elusive pursuit of peace

peace of mind

karmarulez and alchemist, thanks for dropping by, and for the kind words. it was fun trying out the lighting techniques with the nikon speedlights.

nadio, of course you've seen this picture before!

mynn, i've had the same thing too when i first experimented with the shadow/highlight tool. now i've found the 'optimum' settings for this tool, and have set them as the default. so far, the results have been decent, in my books. as for the lighting, i used nikon's creative lighting system, as i did with the bukit tabur shot. it's basically wireless flash photography between the camera and the flashgun. this is one thing that nikon has over canon, which i think can be really useful in achieving specialized effects. basically, two speedlights were placed to the left of the model, so as to give stronger illumination from one side. the other side was illuminated by the sun (as you can see from the right side of the image). by using two sources of light from two different directions, i could still give some texture to the image without resulting in harsh shadows on the subject. although we haven't pinned it down to an exact science yet, the trial and error method sure sticks with us strongly afterwords (yes, you can actually take a basic course in lighting to understand this aspect of photography better).

ezdy, actually we just used our ownselves as models for each other hehe. that was one reason why it was a lot of fun. tak mampu nak bayar orang! but it really wasn't intentional not to invite you, but all of us who went are using nikon cameras with wireless flash capabilities. memang kitorang sampai terbaring baring nak amik gambar ni, because we wanted to capture the tugu negara in full as well. my wide angle lens was really effective for this kind of shot. we met up really early for this session, at around 7am. basically, we wanted to get the sunrise, but the trees obscured the sun, so we had to abandon the sunrise idea. so, we resorted to a CLS session instead. nasib baik tak kena halau hari tu hehe. lighting was basically from two flashguns on one side, and the sun on the other side. the tugu was lit by the sun from one side, which really gave a dramatic impact. as for the model, we'll have to incorprate a backlight the next time, so that the hair doesn't sink into the dark background. had to photoshop that one bit, to bring the hair out.

kitab, in a way, gambar ni memang double cls. asalnya nak letak flashgun on both sides of the subject, tapi bila nampak matahari pun memang dah illuminate one side, kitorang pun letak je la dua dua flashgun tu on the opposite side of the sun. Sat 12-May-2007 02:07
